About The Kybalion Book
The Kybalion: Hermetic Philosophy, originally published in 1908 under the pseudonym of “the Three Initiates”, is a book claiming to be the essence of the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus. They are universal laws and universal laws aimed at the unification of “All-What-Is”, harmony. Insight into these seven principles can just as well serve as a key to gaining insight into the underlying similarities between all (old) wisdom traditions.
The “Three Initiates” who wrote The Kybalion chose to remain unnamed. As a result, a lot of speculation has been made about who really wrote the book. The most popular suggestion is that The Kybalion was written by William Walker Atkinson, either on his own or with, for example, Paul Foster Case or Elias Gewurz.
Atkinson was known to use various aliases, and to self-publish his writings. Between his first written pseudonymous and unsigned works may have been a series named The Arcane Teachings (first printed prior to 1909 and the following edition in 1909), which shows many resemblances to The Kybalion. While the latter book examines the seven “Hermetic Principles”, The Arcane Teachings explores seven “Arcane Laws”; The Kybalion claims to be an elucidation of an antique, unpublished Hermetic text of the same name, and The Arcane Teachings claims to expose the wisdom of an old, unpublished manuscript of occult aphorisms. Both books illustrate 3 “Great Planes” of existence, which are further subdivided into 7 lesser planes. Both books define three of the minor planes as “astral black keys” analogous to the black keys on a piano, and populated by elemental spirits. Also, both books explain the process of “Mental Alchemy” in amazing details, and in near-complete conjunction with one other. There are additional similarities, and some claim that The Arcane Teachings might have been Atkinson’s “first draft” of the material, which later became The Kybalion book. Atkinson also tried to illustrate the operations of the universe in terms of a set of laws in his last book The Seven Cosmic Laws, written in 1931 and printed posthumously in 2011.
The key to common insights in all wisdom traditions: Since the “three initiated” already wrote this down in the first half of the 20th century, it is not so easy to trace the source of this information. However, what is particularly interesting is the reason the authors cite to make this previously secret information public. They write that the Kybalion can be used to reconcile the many bits of knowledge of the Universal Truth that are known here and there, but that seem to conflict with each other. Seven so-called Hermetic principles are described in the Kybalion, and the anonymous writers state that these seven Hermetic principles describe the essence of the nature, meaning and operation of “the universe as a whole.” Therefore, according to them, insight into these seven principles can serve as a key to gain insight into the underlying similarities of all wisdom traditions.
