Cleaning Tips For Your Living Room Furniture
Buying living room furniture is a big investment that requires a lot of search time and preparation. Daily use can have a great impact on the longevity and look of your furniture, and you want to make sure you properly care for it in order to extend its use for as long as possible. Here are some great cleaning tips to keep your furniture looking as fresh and beautiful as the day you bought it.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Stay clear of upholstery cleaners that use harsh chemicals or toxins to clean your furniture. These furniture cleaners may leave your furniture smelling and looking clean for some time, but there are risks associated with cleaning your furniture with them. For starters, these cleansers are typically full of harsh chemicals and toxins that can actually cause more harm than good to your furniture. Additionally, they are known to actually foster resoiling, resulting in more cleaning. These cleaners may also remove the protective layers of your furniture fabric, resulting in furniture that looks more worn, as well as causing harm to your upholstery.
Stay Clear of Steam
Steam cleaning initially sounds like a great idea when it comes to cleaning your furniture. However, it is important to consider what moisture can do to your furniture. Excessive moisture can cause odors, mold, and soil build-up. When steam cleaning is done the excess water must be sucked up, which can take days to fully dry. Even when the fabric appears dry on the surface, the moisture can still be present deep down. Steam cleaning may also strip your furniture’s upholstery, leaving it more prone than before to stains and soil.
Bring Out the Vacuum
Vacuuming your furniture regularly is a great way to clean debris and dirt off of your furniture before it has a chance to seep down and cause problems. Vacuuming will also allow you to prolong the need of more extensive and deep cleaning. Vacuuming should be done at least once a week. Make sure you not only do the visible parts of your furniture; you will also want to make sure you vacuum under the cushions and in the crevices of your furniture.
Spot Clean as Soon as Possible
Accidents happen frequently, and most likely your furniture will not be able to avoid them. Spills are likely to occur, and can lead to permanent stains if not taken care of quickly. Here are some ways to take care of these spills quickly and properly:
Always blot from the outside to the center of a spot. Doing so will control the spread of a spill
Test your fabric in a hidden area to make sure the color doesn not come off with the stain, or that a ring is not caused by the cleaning agent.
If the spot is liquid, use an absorbent white cloth or white paper towel to gently blot up the excess.
If the spot is solid material, remove the excess by lifting it off with a dull table knife or spoon.
Never rub, scrub, or brush a spill.
Never use strong chemicals such as bleach, solvents, or acids unless they are recommended by a specialist.
Never use sudsy detergents, as they leave a soapy residue that attracts dirt.
Avoid using tap water. Use distilled water or plain seltzer water. Minerals in common tap water can cause rings, even on treated fabrics.
Know Your Furniture Needs
There are a wide range of furniture fabrics and styles available. It is important to know which ones may or may not be best for your particular lifestyle. A leather sofa may not fair well with a home full of cats, but can work great with children because it is simple to clean and wipe spills. If you are decorating a room that will be low traffic and more for entertaining you can choose virtually any furniture fabric. You should also be aware that certain fabrics are more resistant to sunlight damage than others. If you need help finding out what fabrics fit your lifestyle, our trained associates will be happy to assist you at any store location.
The sofa and other various items that comprise the living room are often the center piece and the focal point for guests that you invite into your home. Following these tips will assure that your living room furniture is properly maintained and cared for.
Refurbished appliances are those that have been returned to the manufacturer and repaired. In the case of large appliances, this may involve rebuilding or replacing the motor, replacing defective or damaged parts or otherwise making it work and look like a new appliance.
Refurbished appliances are normally returned to the manufacture while they are still under warranty. The buyer, who has purchased a new appliance, expects an appliance that works and looks perfect. If there is a problem, the dealer has several options. He may send a repairman to fix the appliance, or he may exchange the appliance for a new one.
The decision to replace or repair the appliance is based on several factors. If the repair work is relatively minor, the dealer would prefer to have their repairman complete the repair. If the problem is more extensive, the dealer will often give the customer a new appliance, and send the damaged one to the manufacture. The manufacturer’s repair center is more expansive, and they are able to do major repairs. Once they have repaired the appliance, it is resold as a refurbished appliance.
Are They Worth the Savings?
Purchasing a refurbished appliance can offer you a substantial savings. Theoretically, the appliance should work as well as a new one. Whether you should invest your money in a refurbished appliance is determined by a number of factors. Before committing to a refurbished appliance, ask the salesman what warranty the appliance comes with. If there is no warranty, or just a short, 30 day warranty, that may be a warning sign that you are not getting a good deal on this appliance.
Another consideration when deciding whether a refurbished appliance makes sense in your situation is the amount that you will save. Often, the sales pitch for refurbished appliances are that they are as good as new. While they have been factory repaired and inspected, and should last as long as any other appliance, they are not new. Whatever level of use the appliance received before it had to be repaired is still with the appliance. If you are considering buying a refurbished appliance, expect a substantial savings over the cost of a new appliance.
If the appliance comes with a full warranty, that includes the parts that were originally repaired, and the savings are significant, a refurbished appliance may be a good deal. Keep in mind that a refurbished appliance has been in someone else’s home and has been used, so in addition to checking the price and the warranty look the item over carefully for cosmetic damage or missing pieces, such as shelves.
Another Choice, Scratch and Dent
If you are trying to save money when shopping for appliances, but purchasing a refurbished appliance seems risky, another option is shopping at a scratch and dent appliance store. These stores sell new appliances that have been damaged in the store. They have never been used. While no one wants a stove or refrigerator in their kitchen with a huge gouge down the front, you may not mind it in the laundry room. Also, many of the scratches are cosmetic, barely visible or can be touched up with a little appliance paint.
Saving Money When Shopping for Appliances
Appliances are expensive, and the two times most people shop, when they are replacing an entire kitchen or when an appliance unexpectedly quits working, are times when there may not be a lot of discretionary money available. There are, however, several ways that you can save money when shopping for appliances. If you decide that refurbished or scratch and dent appliances are not for you, contact the large appliance stores in your area. They often have brand new appliances that were never delivered for some reason, perhaps the customer changed her mind before delivery, or there was a mistake in the warehouse. These “returned” items are brand new, but will still be sold at a discount.
When new floor models arrive, the older models are sold at a steep discount. While they may have some minor dings, they will not be in too bad of condition or they would not be on the floor. Purchasing one of these floor models is a good way to save money. If you have your heart set on a brand new appliance, with no damage and not previously sold, ask the salesman when they are having their next appliance sale. The salesmen know what products are going on sale each week several weeks before the actual sale. They can let you know when to come back, or may even be able to give you the discount early.
Wendy’s has never really been one to come out with interesting or engaging commercials (or at least that’s the way it’s been ever since I found out that mlb extra innings cost little). However, here recently I’ve been seeing some pretty funny commercials that Wendy’s has been putting out. One of them is just too funny not to talk about.
The commercial starts out by panning across a forest full of people standing around kicking trees slowly. Of course, I was sitting there watching it a little confused as to what the purpose of the kicking was. However, that turned out being the point. After a few seconds of panning across the forest, the camera cuts to one man kicking a tree wearing a red wig that resembles the pig tails of the girl in the Wendy’s logo. He suddenly stops kicking the tree, and says, “Wait a minute.” He begins to turn and look around and epiphany-like music cues. He goes onto say, “This all feels wrong.” He explains that just because everybody else is “doing it,” doesn’t mean that he has to.
He then starts to ask himself why a hamburger is made from frozen beef. He then yells out to the people that are still kicking, “I deserve a hot, juicy burger.” Some people begin to turn and notice him, and he yells again, “That’s right! I deserve a hot, juicy burger!” People begin agreeing with them, and they all begin chanting “HOT, JUICY, BURGER!” and walking together out of the forest. It’s certainly a hilarious commercial, and I’m happy Wendy’s is now producing funny advertisements.
Professional interior designers are expertly trained in the use of lighting features to create breathtaking results. In this four-part series which I call “Colour Me Brightly: Understanding Light in Interior Design,” I draw on my experience in London’s interior design community to explain this fascinating subject. This fourth article concludes my series.
Linear light patterns can focus on either the horizontal or the vertical metrics of a room. A given wall-light technique can create an immersing halo effect, if the interior designer uses concentrated super-bright light at high level that gradually fades out towards the base. Some London Interior Design consultancies specialise in choosing continuous sources, such as a miniature tungsten rack for a soft light or overlapping fluorescents for a cooler light. This is an effect that works very well in contemporary interior designs, where light can be concealed between the wall and the ceiling in a crevice in order to take the place of the traditional cornice.
The best method of illumination for interior designers to use when creating patterns will depend on the interior, and also on the direction of windows (natural light in London can be very seasonal). A smoothly plastered wall can jump into existence with a dappled arc wave from closed-offset down-lighters but if the interior design feature lies in the texture and in the structure or hue of the wall, then a more uniform spray of light will emphasise the wall’s best perspectives. A splashback tile solution at the rear of a shower or bath is a good interior design choice for the arc wave effect, as is a Venetian blind in a London kitchen. A wood-panelled hall or study is often a compelling interior design feature, and accordingly it would be better lit with an even light that does not detract from the feel of the wood.
Shifting from instant to instant and from a London dawn to a dappled full seasonal moonrise, the impacts of illumination and shadow are phenomena we almost disregard. But London’s top interior designers know that patterns of light can actually transform our emotions with respect to the interior forms that engulf us. By bringing to life walls, floors and ceilings with light-focused interior designs, pattern-making is yet another realm of illumination that can brighten our spaces and enhance our quality of life.
